Screwed?

I was on the way to meditation class Friday night and my tire pressure light came on. The car seemed to be driving fine and I was halfway to class so I stayed attentive to the feel of the drive (which is technically what we’re supposed to do when we drive anyway… there was a time before indicator lights!) and made it to the parking lot. Hopped out of the car, flicked on my phone flashlight (another convenience we once survived without) and there it was: a very flat rear tire and what looked like a going-flat front tire.

I hustled into the building, climbed the stairs, hugged my teacher Lisa and told her what happened. As I was dialing AAA, Lisa suggested I get that squared away and come into the class. Class was only going to be an hour and that’s usually the minimum wait time for assistance to arrive. I thought about it… but I know myself. Even if I had a 5 hour wait time, I would struggle to focus in class. I function best when things are squared away, like I had to clean off a section of my desk before I sat down to write to you today. Now that I think about it though, sitting through the class would have been an exercise in growth for me…

As nerdy-adult as this sounds, AAA is excellent. I’ve used them twice for tire troubles and they’ve been kind and attentive on the phone, as have the service people they’ve sent out. The woman who helped me on the phone was named Destiny (I’m just realizing the beauty in this now). Within 30 minutes, half of the estimated time that Destiny told me), a tow truck arrived. The nice man took a look at the tires—thankfully the front tire was just fine! That rear tire was flat almost to the rim though. When he took the flattened tire off and rolled it toward me, there it was: a shiny silver screw, embedded in the rubber.

Acceptance screw

He popped on my spare and I was on the road back home before class even let out. I told the bunny-daddy to take my coconut milk ice cream out of the freezer. I needed a dark chocolate treat to balance out my night. Then yesterday, I went to my favorite service station to get my tire repaired. My favorite service advisor Fenix came into the waiting room after about 20 minutes. He had the saddest look on his face when he told me the tire could not be patched. I needed to buy a new tire. I shrugged, smiled and said, “This is all part of owning a car. It’s not like I can 3-wheel it home!” Relief crossed Fenix’s face. I guess he, like many people in service industries, is used to facing angry or disappointed customers. I think I wowed him with my acceptance. In a beautiful exchange, he wowed me with a $20 discount.

I could have freaked out at any turn, like when the light came on, when I thought I had two flat tires, when my plans changed out of my control, when, even with the discount, I paid $150 for a new tire. But I didn’t. I had clarity. I knew how to manage myself by getting it taken care of right away. I knew kindness and gratitude were the answers. I knew that a screw in my tired didn’t mean I was screwed. Building good Car-ma…

Mallory

Hoppy New Year, Bunnies and Bunny Friends!

My final Reiki session of 2016 was shared with Mallory, a darling Dutch girl whom I helped rescue in 2015 and was adopted by one of our volunteers, my friend Lauren.  Mallory recently lost her husbun Benjamin, so Lauren asked for me to come over and check in on Mal.  Prior to losing Benjamin, Lauren and Mallory went through numerous changes in 2016—a volatile year for many, but hey, if we don’t change, we don’t grow.

I settled in to Mallory’s pen, anointed my third eye chakra with Magnify Your Purpose essential oil and my palms with a few drops of lavender.  Lauren had the diffuser going with a relaxing blend to support our energy work.  As I flowed through my meditation, calling on my guides, Mallory’s guides and angels and all workers of light and energy to join us, Mallory tossed a cardboard tube at me— her way of acknowledging that she was ready to communicate!  Through our hands-on work, Mallory shared with me that she feels in good health.  She has a cautious spirit, which complements Lauren’s adventurous spirit quite well.  Both Mallory and Lauren share an energy, a bond through the adventure of life and bring balance and care to each other.

Mallory tossed her wood and rope toy 5 times.  She also “showed” me the numbers 6 and 4 in combination to create 10 a few times during her session (check out Doreen Virtue’s book on angel numbers to translate Mal’s message!).  When I asked Mallory about her past, she hopped away and turned her back.  She remembers the horrible life she lived before rescue and wants it completely behind her, so I focused the Reiki energy to send healing, forgiveness and forward movement.  Mallory confirmed with me that she loves to snuggle, loves to be wrapped in a blanket as a tangible sense of connection and security.  Who doesn’t love a good snuggle?!

She “showed” me oranges, specifically the fruit and not just the color orange.  When I asked Lauren about this in our chat after the Reiki session, she burst out laughing.  Lauren and a friend were eating oranges in that room just the night before!  Messages like this are confirmation to me that Mallory was receiving the energy and communicating with me.  I don’t question the gift—I just embrace it and share it.

Our Reiki session closed with the theme of surrender and riding out the changes in life, as more are to come (soon!) to this adora-bun family.  Mallory is a protectorate and a symbol of strength for Lauren as much as Lauren is for Mallory— they are truly bonded souls with such a wonderful and needed balance for each other.  I am honored to share Reiki with Mallory and Lauren.  Thank you, my friend.

Hop the Hop

I advise everyone, yes everyone, who asks for coaching, mentorship or just plain advice from me to meditate.  And yet, my practice of meditation is less than consistent!  Since I was on vacation from my “day job” this week, I took the opportunity to talk the talk AND walk the walk… or should we say hop the hop!

My meditation coach and treasured friend Debbie describes meditation and mindfulness as “paying attention on purpose in the present moment non-judgmentally” using the body and all sensory systems.  Start as simply as her directive of “Just Sit.”  That’s where the magic happens.  Believe in the potential or not… you know it’s worth a try!

Debbie trained at The University of Massachusetts Medical School Center for Mindfulness under the direct guidance of the incredible Dr. Jon Kabat-Zinn, so there’s plenty of legit science behind all of this spiritual practice.  Accompanied by fellow Rabbit Rescue volunteer Nicole, I attended a talk Debbie gave this week at Turn of the Corkscrew in Rockville Centre.  Armed with my notebook and my renewed commitment to my own practice, I soaked in all of the goodies from Debbie’s wise words and guided meditations.

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction and its approach to a mediation practice fits well into my human experience.  It’s not the type of practice where you have to run off into the woods with no shoes on and clear you mind completely for hours to reap benefits—quite the opposite.  Debbie reminded the attendees throughout her talk that mindfulness meditation is an exercise to strengthen our brain.  And just like any other muscle or body system, the brain needs work to see progress or change.  You aren’t going to lose weight by eating differently for one day.  You aren’t going to get sick abs by exercising for one week.  It’s all a practice.  In this case, it’s a practice of “lifting emotional weights.”

And this practice is one that helps us to “respond skillfully rather than react,” which is an invaluable skill for me in both my day job and in Rescue.  I receive emails, many of which seem or are urgent, and calls about cases that are literally life or death situations for abandoned rabbits.  If I react, I’m in an ineffective panic.  When I remember to breathe, then respond skillfully, cases are appropriately prioritized and more lives get saved.

Toward the end of her talk, Debbie said, “It’s not about getting rid of stress—it’s developing a new relationship to it.”  And that’s a refreshing truth that I think will resonate with a lot of you reading this.  No matter what passion and path you are hopping, walking, trotting, whatever, stressors are real.  Obstacles appear and sometimes persist.  A meditation practice, even 2 minutes a day, can be the key to surmounting those stressors.  And since I advocate so heavily for the practice, I will hop the hop with you.  Just sit.  And as Debbie says, “Trust in the wisdom.”

“Like” Debbie’s page on Facebook, please.

Run Bun

Invoking my encyclopedic memory to tell you the beginning of this story…

2013:

A normal night at one of our main foster homes.  Owner of said foster home completed her own evening routine and shut the lights to head to bed.  Then the doorbell rang.  With trepidation, she opened the door.  On the porch, a small plastic carrier and a note.  Inside the carrier, two small rabbits, one black and white, one brown and white.  As our addresses are not made public in any capacity, this was no coincidental abandonment.

These two rabbits were aptly named Ring (black and white) and Run (brown and white).  Both small and super lovable.

Later that year, Run was adopted.  Ring found his forever home in 2014.

2016:

We received a heartbreaking email from Run’s mom earlier this weekend.  Being an attentive, loving mom, she noticed that he was having some trouble with one of his paws and his balance.  She immediately brought him to his veterinarian, where he had recently been for a check-up and blood work (all was fine at that previous appointment).  X-rays and tests illuminated the shocking news—Run has developed cancer, including a large mass that is pushing on his spine, causing the mobility and balance issues.

The size and intensity of the mass leave few western medicine alternatives that are safe for dear Run.  And his family is devastated.  Without a second thought, I brought Run Bun, as his mom affectionately calls him, into my distance Reiki meditation.

Distance Reiki and the Distant Healing Symbol is used to send Reiki energy over distance and time to anyone and to anything.  This morning, before sitting down to write, I sat with a picture of Run that Debbie shared with me, put my most powerful mediation oil, Idaho Balsam Fir, on my palms and called on my angels, my guides and all healing energies to encircle Run with love, light and peace.

I’m sharing Run’s story with you today so you can send him healing vibes too.  Send peace to his family.  Send all the health and hoppiness in the world to dear little Run Bun.

It’s a Celebration…

I love my birthday.  As cheesy as that may sound, I just love celebrating me.  And I always have.  I am proud of myself for embracing my gifts (meaning my abilities… not the adorable bracelets I got last night!).  I embrace getting older, too.  I never feel anything but great about the advancing numbers.  I have my mother to thank for that.  She turns 60 this year.  Her unpretentious confidence is an inspiration to women of all ages!

When I celebrate me, it just comes naturally that I celebrate those who are hopping this path with me.  I was born on March 30, 1982, my uncle’s 16th birthday.  I consider him my best friend, my guide, my brother.  Besides my parents, he and his other half spent more time with me than any other person growing up, so I credit them with raising me just as much as I do my parents.  We always celebrate our birthdays together.  Even this year, as Stephen turned 50, we shared a cake with both names on it.  In some ways, we feel like twins, 16 years removed.

Happy 50th Stephen… Happy 34th me.

Every year, I coordinate some sort of celebration for my day with my friends– some years with more classic revelry than others but always uplifting.  Last night, I was blessed to sit at the head of a table, flanked by the most beautiful souls.  Thank you ladies, and the Chris’s who love them, for being there with me.  When I sat in meditative reflection this morning, I saw our table from last night.  My mind’s journey took me around the table where I handed each of my friends in attendance a yellow rose, that classic symbol of friendship.  I treasure you ladies, boundlessly.

I carry my Kindle with me almost everywhere and I often glide through the electronic pages of Doreen Virtue’s Angel Numbers 101, the reference book for numbers we see and numbers that resonate with us.  So before I sat to write this morning, I looked up Virtue’s “translation” of the number 34, the age number that I earned last Wednesday and celebrated thoroughly for the last 8 days:  “34 Your prayers are heard and answered by the angels and ascended masters, who are with you right now.”

Damn right.  Cheers to my 34th and to my earth angels, those with furry tails and those without!

My healer and Reiki master Lisa Lotus Blossom Journeys hosted a workshop and meditation yesterday about Archangel Metatron (he’s the 11:11 guy, to keep it simple). Much of Lisa’s shared wisdom was about expanding our “spiritual GPS” so I’m left today thinking about how I got “here” in this spiritual space. I’m not conventionally religious at all and I don’t think we need to label ourselves or limit ourselves. Maybe today I don’t believe in a “man upstairs” concept of a god but maybe tomorrow I will—I’m all about the fluidity there. As I’ve been getting in touch with and opening up my gifts (we all have them—stop depriving the world of yours!), my “spiritual GPS” has rerouted quite a bit. And not just in the concepts of beliefs or morals or rules but in my purpose and path and daily moves.

I can’t think about my spirit or spiritual connections without the animals, of course. Up until we brought Peanut and Tater Tot home, I was NOT an animal person—talk about rerouting that life GPS. Over the four years those boys have been hopping around our living room, the shifts and turns have emerged—rescue and Reiki being the main two, for now. I was conditioned, as many of us are, to go to school, start a career that provides benefits and a potential pension and live very much within society’s conventions. While that never felt right, (and sometimes felt literally painful), I followed that path and did some amazing work on the way.

Lisa said yesterday: “I believe in the direction I’m getting.” We talked a lot about shifts, changes and departures, about letting go of what you thought something would look like or should be. Yes, it’s scary to deviate from convention. It’s intimidating to take a risk, regardless of the perceived weight or potential impact of the risk. But I’m open to turn, to curve or to even blaze a trail at this point. I may not know what it looks like yet, but I do know that I’m walking away (walking… not yet sprinting…) from what “everyone” says “you should do” more briskly than I ever have before.

Listen to your guides. I’m blessed that Metatron is my main guide—he “means business,” like Lisa says about him and he’s behind our transformations in life. Engage in the transformation.
